What is a School Travel Plan?
The mode of travel chosen for a child’s journey to school is recognised as having an impact not only on their safety but also on their health and personal development and of course the environment in which they live.
A School Travel Plan aims to:
- Look at practical ways to encourage alternatives to the car.
- Improve safety on the school journey.
- Improve health and fitness of children and the community by encouraging more walking and cycling.
- Encourage the use of public transport and car sharing.
- Reduce car use, thereby pollution and congestion.

Why is a School Travel Plan Needed?
There is wide spread concern with congestion on Wolverhampton's roads especially during the school run during peak times. Approximately 8.3 million children nationally making their way to and from school at these times with many being transported by car. It is estimated that 1 in 10 cars on the road between 8 o'clock and 9 o'clock in the morning is on the school run. We all notice how quieter the roads are during school holidays and there is clearly a link between the number of cars and congestion at these times.

The Government's Travel to School Initiative has now ended and the majority of schools have a School Travel Plan. Schools are, however, encouraged to continue to update their School Travel Plans and promote sustainable modes of transport to school.
Remember encouraging children to become fitter and healthier improves their alertness and aids concentration in the classroom!
